South Sound Technology Conference this Friday March 6th

This Friday, March 6th, William Philip Hall on the UWT campus will be filled with hundreds of attendees to the South Sound Technology Conference.  Having chaired the conference for 14 of it's 15 years I am pleased to say that Congressman Adam Smith and Congressman Derek Kilmer are once again are honorary co-chairs of the South Sound Technology Conference.  Congressman Adam Smith will be there in person to provide some opening remarks in the 2015 addition of this 15 year running showcase for technology and entrepreneurship in the South Puget Sound.

The annual South Sound Technology Conference, which is hosted by the Institute of Technology at the University of Washington Tacoma and slated for this Friday, March 6th, brings together leaders from industry, education and government from around the state to discuss and demonstrate technological innovations and their ongoing applications.

This year the conference will highlight information and cybersecurity in its keynote addresses and some of the panels. Janine Teranno, CEO of Topia Technology will be the morning keynoter and discuss information protection in the cloud, and Bill Boni discuss protecting the infrastructure and your information.  Panel and keynote presentations - including networking opportunities - provide a venue to discuss, explore, understand and deploy technology as a solution, an opportunity and an advantage. These panels will include entrepreneurial networking opportunities, a discussion of the Kaufmann 1 Million Cups Tacoma project along with success stories and how technology will provide solutions for energy issues in the future.

Bill Boni is Corporate Information Security Officer and Vice President Enterprise Information Security for T-Mobile U.S.A. An information-protection specialist for 30 years, Boni joined T-Mobile in 2009. Previously, he was Corporate Security Officer of Motorola Asset Protection Services. Throughout his career, he has helped organizations design and implement cost-effective programs to protect both tangible and intangible assets. He pioneered the application of computer forensics and intrusion detection to deal with incidents directed against electronic business systems. He was awarded CSO Magazine’s “Compass Award” and “Information Security Executive of the Year – Central” in 2007.

18 Washington State Tech Companies to 2015 Mobile World Congress

                    18 Washington state tech companies are bound for Barcelona, 2015 Mobile World Congress.

The Washington State Department of Commerce aims to increase awareness and sales in international markets for innovative technology businesses.

Demonstrating the state’s leadership in the information and communication technology (ICT) sector, the Washington State Department of Commerce is leading a delegation of 18 companies at GSMA Mobile World Congress in Barcelona, Spain, the world’s largest conference for the mobile tech industry. This is the fourth consecutive year Commerce has showcased new platform solutions and services in mobile apps, game design, productivity, security and location mapping developed by some of the state’s most creative and forward-thinking businesses.

“Washington is one of the nation’s vital hotbeds for established and new businesses that are pushing the envelope in digital media and mobile technology development,” said Brian Bonlender, state Commerce Director. “By putting our delegation on the international stage at Mobile World Congress, we are providing them with an opportunity to increase global awareness of their technologies and pave the way for future growth.”

The Washington State Department of Commerce Pavilion, themed “Choose Washington,” features a mix of established mobile technology businesses and startups for conference attendees to view demonstrations and learn more about their unique solutions. Pavilion exhibitors include: APImetrics,Apptentive, autograph, Black Pixel, Buddy Platform Inc., Codeproof, General UI, Glympse, Guppy Games|Media, IndoorAtlas, INRIX, Studio Pepwuper, PlayFab, Orca Wave, Sequitur Labs, Sirqul, and Syntonic, TouchBase, plus the non-profit organizations, One Redmond and Washington Interactive Network.

“As a startup, Mobile World Congress offers tremendous opportunity to introduce our technology to major global brands. We participated in the conference as part of the Washington State Department of Commerce delegation two years ago and found the experience to be extremely valuable as we were able to focus on our business goals instead of logistics. After participating last year on our own, we enthusiastically signed up for 2015, and we are already seeing the benefits from being a part of this great community,” said Bryan Trussel, co-founder and CEO of Glympse.

The Department of Commerce team organizes business matchmaking introductions for their exhibitor companies to meet with mobile carriers, hardware manufacturers, enterprise mobility strategists and marketers to negotiate licensing agreements and grow global awareness of their unique technologies and services. Though customer relationships often take years to develop, Washington State companies have already reported nearly $8 million in new sales as a result of their participation in this event over the last three years.

Many of these companies are smaller startups that wouldn’t be able to attend international trade shows of this caliber without the export vouchers provided by Commerce. Made possible through the Small Business Administration’s State Trade Export Promotion (STEP) program, these funds help offset the cost of attending major international trade events.

UWT Part of Cyber P3i

The U.S. Army Reserve is creating the U.S. Army Reserve Cyber Public Private Partnership Initiative, or Cyber P3i, a center for enhanced cybersecurity training with six universities involved in the program.

Universities involved in the initial program include the Drexel University, University of Washington Tacoma, George Mason University, the University of Texas at San Antonio, Norwich University and the University of Colorado – Colorado Springs.

Jeffrey Talley, chief of the Army Reserve, said each of the schools were chosen for their "excellence in cybersecurity research, teaching and their experience in helping the public and private sectors address cybersecurity issues."

Seattle National Cybersecurity Summit Open House

The Seattle National Cybersecurity Summit Open House will be held on February 13 from 8:00 AM -­-2:00 PM at the Washington State Criminal Justice Training Commission, Cascade Building Auditorium, 19010 1^st Avenue South, Burien, WA 98148.

Techcrunch Disrupt-like Pitch Competition at NFTE’s StartUp Tech Expo

WHO: Witness young tech titans in the making! Network for Teaching Entrepreneurship will host its first ever StartUp Tech Expo with high school students from Tech Access Foundation, a STEM focused public school for students of color for grades 6-12.

WHAT/VISUAL: Experience first-hand the energy and innovation of the Techcrunch Disrupt-like Pitch Competition. Four teams will be given a few minutes to pitch their app idea to an audience filled with local business owners, executives, entrepreneurs, students and educators.

App ideas will include a sign language learning app, a real-time local natural disasters help and alert app, a STEM gaming tool and even an app that allows users to change battery draining settings on their phone, plus a prototype of a solar powered phone. Teams will be awarded a cash prize - winners will announced at the Expo.

WHY: The Pitch Competition and the Expo are the culmination of the StartUp Tech program – a pilot tech entrepreneurship program developing high school students entrepreneurship and coding skills which is running in four cities nationwide.

The event will also include a Q+A session with Googlers about what it’s like to work at the Internet product and services behemoth. 

EXAMPLE: The award winning team of 7th graders, JSark Industries (the J is silent) had been working on their solar powered phone case prototype in their Engineering class with Mr. Diaz, founder of SODO Makerspace.

When the team entered the StartUp Tech Incubator this semester they learned how to add a software component to their hardware plans.

In addition to submitting their idea to the Verizon App Challenge in November, they also presented their concept at the TAF Academy STEM Pitch Event at Impact Hub Seattle.

Catch teammate, Ravi who’s starting a crowdfunding campaign at the Expo, with the hopes of travelling to the 11th International Fab Lab Conference & Symposium in Boston this summer.
